First Class Nursery

Welcome To First Class Nursery

About Us

The aim of First Class is to provide a safe, secure and caring environment for babies and children on a daily basis.  Here they will prepare for primary school within a happy stimulating and educationally structured environment.

Our Staff

Ann McLauchlin the nursery owner, now semi retired, is an experienced primary teacher with a background at primary 1 and 2 levels.  Her daughter and now Managing Partner Jill Davidson has worked at First Class on and off since it’s opening in 1996.  She has previous management experience running nurseries in Birmingham and Manchester.  Jill has a previous degree and an SVQ IV (management qualification).  Floor manager, Naomi Chisholm qualified in 1999 and has been with First Class since, having supervised all age groups before managing.  Naomi has also completed her SVQ IV.  Each age group has permanent staff and is supervised by at least two experienced fully qualified staff members. We are manned well above the recommended ratios of staff to children and boast a long serving core staff.  Well over half of our staff are fully qualified the other half in training (post probation) towards SVQ II and then III.  We welcome students from Aberdeen College and work experience pupils.  All staff and placements are Disclosure Scotland checked at Enhanced Level.  We operate a performance related bonus scheme for senior staff and an incentivised ‘Employee of the Quarter’ for junior staff as voted by staff, parents and children.  Where funding is restricted we commit to part funding staff qualifications.  We are also committed to CPD (continuous professional development) offering and funding a wide variety of courses.  Staff retention is important to us at First Class.

Our Nursery

First Class will allow babies and children to play and learn in safety.  Through structured play situations children will develop essential communication skills, learning to listen attentively and to contribute orally with both adults and their peers.  They will learn social skills, good manners, sharing and taking turns and be encouraged to be independent, make choices and to problem solve in a diverse environment ensuring equality for all.

There is a vast assortment of resources to challenge children. Through ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ and the ‘Pre - birth to Three’ document children enjoy a wide variety of activities to incorporate music, movement, role-play, art and craft, story time, construction, IT, physical play and many more…

Activities are geared specifically to age and ability and a soft room, sensory room and separate sleep room is available for babies.

The large garden area is part grassed and part safety matted.  It features a sensory rock garden and planting area for older children to tend as well as various bird boxes.  The nursery is fully equipped with outdoor toys and activities, buggies and Walkodiles (Child Safety Walkers).  We also enjoy restricted access to the Macaulay grounds.  This provides perfect opportunities for walks, nature studies and picnics.  The nursery is ideally situated in the community with a school, community centre, library, parks, shops and a post office within walking distance!
